In the rural areas of the Philippines, there is a dire need for textbooks and other books for the children to read. Typically, the teacher has one textbook and she teaches by using a blackboard and chalk. One of my high school classmates and a lifelong friend, David Ayres and I had discussed the possibility of starting an elementary school library for the children in Talakag. However, we were still in the planning stages when David tragically died of a heart attack. His family, in his memory provided the funding to build the library. Many of our classmates and donors from several states donated books to equip the library. Geri Maiatico, our In Country Director and three former Peace Corps Volunteers from the 1960’s, traveled to Talakag and cataloged the several thousand books that were donated. Talakag now has one of the best elementary school libraries in the Philippines. Thank you, friends and relatives of David Ayres, former Peace Corps Volunteers, and other book donors!
